Steel DC01 (1.0330)

Cold rolled unalloyed sheet to EN 10130, material number 1.0330. Cold rolling buys an even surface and thickness tolerances that hot rolled cannot hold, and the low carbon leaves enough ductility for a tight bend. It is bare steel: it rusts, and the mill oil on it protects nothing past delivery.

Typical parts: Brackets, base plates, covers, housings and spacers, anything that stays indoors or gets coated.

Which thickness for which part

DC01 is cold rolled steel, St12 on older drawings, and in the trade often just called thin sheet. It is the cheapest sheet we cut, and good enough for most parts that stay indoors or get a coating. We cut 1 to 2.5 mm:

  • Spacers, shims, covers, templates: 1 mm
  • Housing parts, trim panels, front panels: 1.5 mm, or 2 mm once an edge is longer than about 300 mm
  • Mounting plates: 2 mm for devices up to about 10 kg, 2.5 mm up to about 20 kg
  • Anything that has to carry more: S355MC, from 3 mm

These are rules of thumb for static loads. If a part carries people or could do damage if it fails, someone should run the numbers.

How the part arrives

The parts arrive dry, without oil. That is handy for painting, but it also means bare steel quickly picks up flash rust in damp air, sometimes within a few days in a cellar or garage. If you are not going to coat the parts straight away, store them dry or give them a thin coat of oil.

At 1 to 2.5 mm the edges can usually be handled without any rework, and deburring is rarely needed.

Tolerance is ISO 2768-m: a 50 mm tab is within ±0.3 mm, a hole up to 6 mm within ±0.1 mm.

Coating and working on it

  • Powder coating: We do not coat in house, but it is the most durable finish for steel and lasts for years outdoors, as long as it is not damaged.
  • Zinc plating: Good indoors and in sheltered places outdoors. Directly exposed to the weather, powder coating lasts longer.
  • Painting yourself: Degrease, scuff lightly, prime, paint. Since the parts come without oil, degreasing is quick.
  • Threads: Have the core hole cut with the part. M3 needs at least 1.5 mm, M4 at least 2 mm, M5 at least 2.5 mm.
  • Welding: MAG, TIG and spot welding are all straightforward. Grind off any coating at the weld first.

Common mistakes

  • Bare DC01 outdoors or in a damp room: It rusts within weeks. For anything outdoors, have it powder coated or choose stainless.
  • Storing parts uncoated before painting: Flash rust forms quickly. Remove it with an abrasive pad before painting, or the paint will lift later.
  • Welding zinc plated parts: The zinc fumes are harmful. Grind the zinc off at the weld first and make sure there is good ventilation.
  • Choosing stainless where DC01 would do: For indoor parts or parts that get painted anyway, DC01 does the same job for a fraction of the price.

Questions and Answers

How tight can I bend it?
Inner radius of about one thickness across the grain, nearer 1.5 along it. DC01 is a drawing grade, that is what it is bought for.
Why does it stop at 2.5 mm?
EN 10130 is a fine sheet standard and stock runs out around 3 mm. From 3 mm we cut S355MC, which costs roughly the same per kilo and is a good deal stronger.
It is the cheapest thing here. By how much?
Roughly a factor of four against stainless or aluminium per kilo, and steel is dense, so the gap on a finished part is smaller than that. Still, start here and move up only when something forces you to.
