Custom Link Plates With Rounded Ends
A flat connector with a hole at each end and rounded heads; the template is called "Link Bar" in the configurator. In its "Length" field you enter the hole spacing, centre to centre, the dimension that matters; the width and bore follow your bolt. The holes sit exactly in the centre of the rounded ends, so the same amount of material stays all round.
What it is for: Connecting plates for timber beams and pergolas, tie rods and links in mechanisms and model making, chain links for decoration and furniture, tensioning straps for tarpaulins, replacement links for gate and flap linkages, extensions for brackets that are too short.

The limits that matter for this link
- Dimensions: hole spacing ("Length" in the configurator) 10 to 1000 mm, width 5 to 300 mm; the overall length is spacing plus width and ships as a parcel up to 1150 mm. The bore can be at most 80 % of the width.
- Web: around each hole, leave at least as much material as the sheet is thick. At 20 mm width and Ø 8.5 that is 5.75 mm on each side.
- Material and thickness: structural steel S355MC 3 to 6 mm for links that pull, steel DC01 1 to 2.5 mm, stainless 1.4301 1 to 5 mm, aluminium AlMg3 1 to 4 mm.
- Tolerance: ISO 2768-m, so the hole spacing holds ±0.3 mm at 80 mm and ±0.5 mm at 150 mm. For a pin with clearance, make the bore 0.3 to 0.5 mm larger.
- Load: we do not check strength. For links whose failure could hurt people, on railings, swings or trailers for example, have an engineer check the thickness.
Common questions about custom link plates
- Which thickness for a link plate?
- For decoration, models and light mechanisms, 2 mm steel is enough. For links on timber beams or gates, take 4 to 6 mm structural steel S355MC, or 4 to 5 mm stainless if they stay outdoors.
- Link, strap, coupler: what is the difference?
- The shape is the same: two holes, rounded ends. It is a strap or connecting plate when it joins two parts, a link or coupler when it turns in a joint. For a joint, give the bore 0.3 to 0.5 mm of clearance to the pin.
- Can the link have more than two holes or square ends?
- For square ends with a row of holes, the slotted bar or the mounting plate is the better template. A third hole, another outline or a slot is added in the sketcher.
- Is the link available cranked?
- Not yet, we only cut flat at the moment. A cranked link, as timber work uses for offset beams, comes with bending.
