Sheet metal weight calculator

How heavy is a sheet? Choose the material, enter thickness, length and width, and the calculator shows the weight in grams or kilograms, for one piece and for the whole quantity. Free, no sign-up.

Weight per piece

157 g

Per square metre: 7.85 kg

How it is calculated

The weight is the volume of the sheet times its density. With the dimensions in millimetres and the density in g/cm³, divide by a million at the end to get kilograms.

Weight (kg) = length × width × thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000

Example: a sheet of Steel DC01, 1,000 × 500 × 2 mm, has a volume of 1 dm³. Times 7.85 kg/dm³ that is 7.85 kg.

Weight per square metre and millimetre

Every further millimetre of thickness adds the same value again: 3 mm weigh three times as much as 1 mm. These are the same densities our prices are calculated with.

Questions about sheet weight

How heavy is a square metre of steel sheet?
Steel has a density of 7.85 g/cm³, so a square metre weighs 7.85 kg per millimetre of thickness: 1 mm weighs 7.85 kg, 2 mm 15.7 kg, 3 mm 23.55 kg. Stainless steel, at 7.9 kg, is almost the same.
How much lighter is aluminium?
Aluminium AlMg3 has 2.67 g/cm³, a little over a third of steel. A 3 mm aluminium plate weighs about as much as a 1 mm steel plate of the same size.
Are holes and cut-outs subtracted?
No, the calculator uses the full rectangle. For a part with holes, subtract their area: a 10 mm hole in 2 mm steel saves about 1.2 g.
How accurate is the result?
As accurate as the nominal dimensions. Sheets have thickness tolerances, and the density varies a little between alloys, so the real weight can differ by a few percent. That is enough for shipping and planning; for billing by weight, the scale decides.
